Car window smashed
iPod News
ok, bad news/good news.

Bad:

I stopped at Walgreen's in Renton on the way home today. The good
parking spots were taken. I parked in the side facing Rainier Avenue, which I usually don't do. I went in to Walgreen's.

I came out 45 minutes later and saw glass all around my car. Looked closer and the driver's window was smashed. Completely gone.

Ran back in and told the security guard. Two of them came out and looked
around. One called the cops. They told me that the cameras don't cover the
whole lot and I had parked just barely outside of the camera range.

Good:

Not a single thing inside the car was touched. Which is good, because although I don't generally like to do this, I had left the iPod and the camera on the front seat... covered by a heavy wool cloak. Everything was still exactly as it should be. The radio is still there including faceplate. No damage or marking to/around the ignition. I think the seat was still in my position, but I am not sure. Nothing else seemed to have been touched at all. Really weird.

There was, however, an odd white mark on the outside of the door mirror.

The cop showed up and we watched the security cameras to see if anything
useful showed up and nothing did.

The theory is that either:

1. Someone smashed it in but since they did it right on Rainier Ave under a
bright bright streetlight, someone came along and saw them and scared them.

2. A large vehicle hit the mirror, leaving a white mark, and managed to pop
the window right out! (That seems like an odd theory to me... wouldn't there be more damage to the vehicle?) Evidence supporting this: more glass outside the car than in. But there was a bunch in too.

Anyway. My car has no window and I am not pleased.

Elin Kling For Marciano

A few nice iPhone News images I found:

Elin Kling For Marciano
iPhone News
Image by Eva Rinaldi Celebrity and Live Music Photographer
Elin Kling X Guess By Marciano Capsule Collection Launch

Elin Kling X Guess By Marciano Capsule Collection Launch; East Sydney, Australia ...

East Sydney, Australia, and yet another product / fashion launch, with the usual splash of celebrities.

Firstly, Marciano is a leading lifestyle brand by Guess, so with that out of the way, a bit of colour banter to keep you interested with a bit of back story...

It's said "celebrity sells", but time will tell in seeing just how long the product world will continue to roll out the celebrities. Clearly, Guess and friends are sticking with the formula for the time being.

Of course, you have the A list, B list and C list et al... this event was a mix, to be fair. It's all really about selling product and trying to make it fly off the shelves in the end, and playing the media card. A tad more interesting than reading fashion advertisements in the even thinning Australian broadsheets - newspapers and fashion magazine advertising doesn't come cheap either. News coverage usually beats regular advertising, so the fashion and lifestyle product world will likely continue to hold bashes and parties while playing the celeb card for a while yet.

Next week Australia will get more brand launches, more fashion parties, with many of the usual suspect celebs coming along just to be seen and read about themselves in the paper - or online - whatever the case. Add a bit of gossip... you get a bit of news, and wallah - there's another PR campaign in the bag.

Fun Facts:

Guess (styled as GUESS) is an American clothing line brand. Guess also markets other fashion accessories besides clothes, such as watches, jewelry and perfumes. The company also owns the line Marciano.

The company began advertising in 1982, then later they introduced their iconic black-and-white ads in 1985.[3] The ads have won numerous Clio Awards. Their fashion models have included a number of supermodels, many of whom, such as Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova, Valeria Mazza, and Laetitia Casta, first achieved prominence via these ad campaigns.

Marciano is an Italian given name and it originates from Latin Marcianus or Marcian (Saint Marcians) or "Martians" or Martianus. Also from the cult of Roman god Mars.

Elin Kling is a Swedish fashion blogger born in 1983 in Sweden. She runs a Scandinavian fashion blog called Style by Kling.

Elin Kling started off her career in fashion as a model, with her base in Milano, Italy. Over the years she has also worked within Swedish Television-business. Today she's also the editor of her own-found magazine Style By which can be bought online for iPad's, iPod's and iPhone's as well as in physical form in stores in Sweden.

Vesuvio Café in North Beach, San Francisco.

Photographs in this collection have been produced by Heather Do, Connor Rowe, Kathleen Markham, Alison Lowrie, Kenneth Chiu, Katie Salmond, Diana Chavez, Elena Toffalori, Ashley Vink, Aimee O'Dea, Liz Dolinar, Allison Barden, Justine Khoury, Daniele Alaniz-Roux, and Justin Thach at the request of Michael Ashley for the UC Berkeley Anthropology 136e class, Spring 2011. The purpose was to digitally document the cultural heritage of Vesuvio Café to not only document the cultural history embeded into the ageless walls but also to connect spatially the symbiotic relationship that preserves the legacy of beatnik culture today.

Vesuvio Cafe, (37.79757°N 122.40625°W), located in the North Beach region of San Francisco Bay, is a cultural bastion preserving the cultural heritage of bohemian era and the beatnik culture that generated its establishment by Henri Lenoir in 1949 and made infamous by the renown authors such as Jack Kerouac from which the adjacent alley is named. The building in which the bar is housed is otherwise known as the Cavalri building built in 1913 and expanded to a second story in 1918 and designed by Zanolini with Italian Renaissance revival elements. The transient existence of these unkempt literary members and their constituents is reflected in the liminal location of the former saloon restaurant at the border between the vagrant Chinese- Italian communities; by 1970[1], most of the diverse cultures regressed into economical housing . Vesuvio Café despite its rich history back to the 1950’s , are not historically preserved site; in fact, they were rented until 1999[2] by managers Chris and Janet Clyde, whose proprietary hopes to protect the building from other commercial interest. Over the years, Vesuvio has undergone its share of renovations and damages such as the 1999 retrofitting for earthquake safety or even the 1973 damage dealt to the building by an errant bus[3]. Over the years, the "I'll never forget after the retro-fitting, one man came in, he was about 55 years old and in a business suit," Clyde said. "He actually had tears in his eyes when he looked at the place. He said, `You didn't change anything.' Vesuvio has kept its character as a neighborhood bar.”[4]

Photographs in this collection were shot on April 11, 2011 between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm Pacific Time under variable natural lighting due to cloudy skies with intermittent periods of morning exposure conditions. Photos were captured on the following cameras: Canon DSLR XTI/T2i, S95, Sony Cybershot, Canon Powershot. Lenses used include: Macro 60mm, Telephoto 70-200, Canon T2i 18-55mm, Canon XTI 17-85mm. A tripod was used for timelapse, Gigapan, macro, telephoto, HDR, and photogrammetry shots. iPhones were also used for documentation shots and Geo-tagging. The photos were post-processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.

Description written by Kenneth Chiu, following Addison’s proposed virtual heritage metadata format in his chapter “The Vanishing Virtual” in New Heritage: New Media and Cultural Heritage, edited by Kalay, et al., and published by Routledge in 2007.

May 8th 2008 - Things That Go Bump In The Night
iPod News
This photo is lit only by my phone.

So today was a LONG day. Went to Prattville to get some footage and take some photos, then came back to shoot a restraunt that served Asian Cuisine. Then took one of the vehicles into the city to get serviced.

So after that, I came home, took a short nap and then had dinner outside with the girls while we enjoyed the breeze.... from the enormous storm that was just about to hit us!

So after dinner I went to work on the magazine only to be interupted by the darkness.

So we waited for the lights to come back. Tam and I entertained ourselves with some Strongbad Emails that I had on my iPhone and watched some cartoons on Tam's iPod. After that I just caught up on my news. So this is what I must have looked like the rest of the night.

So why am I making this face? Well.. I'm a bit shocked. Some potheads from Texas apparently decided to dig up a grave and sever a corpses head. Why would they do this? To make a bong out of it of course! This is why I don't do drugs :-/

A tweet in the Manchester Evening News on Friday 29th June regarding The Haçienda and the Madchester scene of the late 80s and early 90s.

Some still see Manchester the clubbing capital of the world and will always associate the city with the Madchester era (myself included by the way) and others would rather it was put to bed....Permantley!!

Taken inside a greasy spoon (forget the name of it by the way) near Mill Gate Shopping Centre in Bury, this was that very day the Stone Roses did that gig at Heaton Park and practically became the talk of the nation!

Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore at SXSW

A few nice iPhone News images I found:

Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore at SXSW
iPhone News
Pete Cashmore of Mashable sat down with me yesterday that SXSW in Austin, Texas to discuss the rise of Mashable, how the iPad might affect the print publishing industry, CPMs for online display ads, burning the boats, Mashable's future ambitions and more.

LISTEN: ontherecordpodcast.com/pr/otro/mashable-pete-cashmore.aspx

Show Notes:

00:45 -- Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore talks about his online social media guide, which is designed to provide information to those focused on social media marketing, individuals looking to get the most out of tools like Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare hands how to use social media tools and services as utilities.

01:36 -- Mashable was founded in 2005 by Pete Cashmore at the age of 19 out of his house in Scotland. Fueled by his interests in the Internet and a hunch that blogging seemed as good a way as any to get started, he decided to launch the site with no real connections to anyone in social media at the time and the belief that he could run by doing. Since then, Nashville has grown to 20 employees and over 50 writers who work part-time basis. But Pete maintains a grounded perspective by spending most of his time out of the social media bubble in his home country, the UK, where he can focus on putting out great content.

02:52 -- Given the doldrums of the ad supported media business, Pete has managed to buck the trend by focusing on delivering niche content to a premium audience, which deliver high CPMs. As brands look for ways to get people to pay attention to what they're doing on twitter and Facebook, Mashable presents a highly targeted advertising opportunity.

03:22 -- Pete sees the iPad as a potential savior for the print publishing industry. By presenting publishers with a viable, practical alternative to the printed page, mash able CEO Pete Cashmore says that since people are somewhat comfortable paying for content on their mobile phones, he believes that comfort will extend to the iPad. "It's essentially a device that lets you package media. I think it might even break the cycle of people expecting news for free on the web. And I think we might see with devices like the iPad, like the iPhone, that people are used to paying for content. believes could be channels where people are actually prepared to pay for media," says Cashmore.

04:15 -- In terms of how much a magazine publisher might charge for an iPad subscription, Pete says the numbers vary widely. But his guess is, an annual subscription might go for around .

05:46 -- Pete Cashmore discusses what he considers to be a good CPM for online advertising, which is anything over for online display ads and as much as for online video at its. four publishers with really focused content, he has seen them get as much as per thousand impressions. Google ad sense, on the other hand, provides much lower CPMs of -.

06:36 -- There's a cannibalization that needs to take place, says Pete. We are seeing traditional publishers resist the transition. They're trying to keep the cash cow alive. the written word in print may be more profitable currently that is online, but obviously, there's going to be a transition. On how the mainstream outlets are doing so far, Pete believes many of the major newspapers and magazines are making the transition to digital quite well. And to those who don't make the leap will disappear by attrition.

08:07 -- Commenting on Marc Andreessen's recent comment that mainstream media outlets need to "burn the boats" Pete says "The rule of cannibalization is you either cannibalize yourself or someone else is going to do it for you."

08:30 -- To drive his point home, Pete talks about how Apple cornered the music industry with iTunes by making it easier to pay for music instead of just suing people. Through ease-of-use and accessibility, they become major players in the music business, simply because the music business stayed focused on milking their cash cow, leaving themselves open to cannibalization, which is exactly what Apple did. And now, the same risk exists for print publishers. Blogs have sprung up, and if print publishers don't make the leap, they too are vulnerable to be cannibalized. In the tech space, where consumers are early adopters of technology, that cannibalization is well underway.

10:45 -- Pete thinks all media companies should be open to a variety of formats. But Mashable's expertise currently is creating great text. Rather than divert his focus at this point he is steering clear of audio and video. Nevertheless he can foresee approaching those opportunities through media partnerships.

12:16 -- Mashable does not currently cover B2B extensively. But an example of a company he believes is serving the interests of B2B marketers is CoTweet, which makes it easy for multiple authors to collaborate on a brand's Twitter account. The other area of B2B that Mashable covers are the analytics firms that monitor, measure and evaluate the effectiveness of social media marketing initiatives.

14:16 -- In terms of people who Pete associates with social media marketing, he mentions Chris Brogan who speaks about how brands can command and communicate well with audiences.

15:15 -- For those interested in having their social media products or services featured in actual, the best way to pitch is by sending e-mail to news@mashable.com which is staffed 24/7. For best results, keep it short and to the point.
