A history of Pedal Power under way, and the story of volunteering ...

Volunteers are central to nearly everything we do at Pedal Power ACT, and have been since our early days.

One of our volunteers, Bryan Kalms, is working on a project documenting the 40 year history of Pedal Power ACT (you can read more about the project here).

A member since 2007, Bryan says he initially joined Pedal Power ACT from an interest in urban design and the impact urban design had on the development of cycle infrastructure. Since then he’s volunteered on many projects, from helping review the new website, to running a mountain biking group once a week.

Bryan has been looking for a history project, and with 40 years and 245 editions of the newsletter, years of magazines and many people to interview, the project means he’s getting to know the history of the organisation inside out.

Although Bryan is only two months into the project, some key trends are already clear.

“Pedal Power has been extremely effective as an advocacy group, which has become apparent through my history research. Pedal Power’s volunteers have changed the physical face of Canberra though their advocacy work,” says Bryan.

“It’s amazing how much work the Pedal Power volunteers actually do, and the how many years they stay with the organisation.”

My Easter morning serving of Krebs & Sumatra
iPad News
One of the churches I walked past on the way to Starbucks on Copeland and Tennessee. I've begun to think of this new Starbucks as my grandmother's, because her last name was Copeland and she lived in Tennessee (Chattanooga) and she liked coffee. Reminded me of an old News From Lake Wobegone in the 1980s when Garrison Keillor talked about what he called The Church of Sunday Brunch that many people attended faithfully in place of whatever church they might have grown up attending.

Krebs was J. S. Bach's best student and a great (underappreciated) composer himself – I especially like his pipe organ music, which I also have a 5 CD set of. And to compliment it the Starbucks brewed coffee this morning included Sumatra (my first cup at about 8:30, early for me) and Sulawesi (my free refill), two of my favorites.

The public library book I'm finishing reading here (70 pages left) will be the 20th Donna Leon Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery that I've read, a writer and series I discovered only three months ago. Mysteries are a genre I've almost completely ignored for decades, before getting hooked on these Brunetti mysteries, which are a great way to learn about Venice in depth (not the superficial tourist sightseeing and shopping experience).

“How do you know if Donald Trump is lying? His lips are moving.” ―David Letterman
iPhone News
“If I still had a show,” says the 69-year-old, dressed in a baggy sweater and cargo pants and sitting high above midtown Manhattan in a conference room at his publicist’s offices, “people would have to come and take me off the stage. ‘Dave, that’s enough about Trump. We’ve run out of tape.’ It’s all I’d be talking about. I’d be exhausted.”

Beyond that, I remember a friend in the PR business told me that he knew for a fact — this was three or four presidential campaigns ago — that Donald Trump would never run for president; he was just monkeying around for the publicity.

So I assumed that was the story and now it turns out he’s the president. Now, who owns New York?

Say the head of the family, let’s say his name was Larry Wasserstein.

If Larry behaved the way Donald behaves, for even a six-week period, the family would get together and say, “Jesus, somebody better call the doctor.”

Then they’d ask him to step down.

But Trump’s the president and he can lie about anything from the time he wakes up to what he has for lunch and he’s still the president. I don’t get that.

I’m tired of people being bewildered about everything he says: “I can’t believe he said that.”

We gotta stop that and instead figure out ways to protect ourselves from him.

We know he’s crazy.

We gotta take care of ourselves here now.

That press conference that he held berating the news media?

I mean, how do you build a dictatorship?

First, you undermine the press: “The only truth you’re going to hear is from me.”

And he hires the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Steve Bannon, to be his little buddy.

Bannon looks like a guy who goes to lunch, gets drunk, and comes back to the office: “Steve, could you have just one drink?” “Fuck you.”

How is a white supremacist the chief adviser to our president?

Did anybody look that up?

I don’t know.

’m sure the Russians groomed Trump.

They gave him tips: “You want to be an authoritarian dictator? Sure, that’s not a problem. We’ll tell you how to do it, for God’s sake.”

I think it was just all like that, because that’s the way Trump does business: “See if they’ll give us the tar coating? They’ll throw that in? Great, great. And by the way, we’re not paying the last 10 percent of the bill.”

How do you know if Donald Trump is lying? His lips are moving.

But in addition to every other thing that’s wrong with the Trump, he’s ignorant in a way that’s insulting to the office, insulting to America, insulting to human rights, insulting to civil rights, insulting to John Lewis.

There were long lines when the iPhone 4 went on sale at 7 am on Thursday, June 24th

The line wasn't as long by the time I returned to get a phone around 3 pm that afternoon, but I was warned the wait could be five hours

It turned out to be about three hours (which still was long enough that some people left the line even though they had reserved a phone).

Cool Toys Pic(s) of the Day (ahem, Week) - Grid Republic, BioArtography, uChek, The Wait We Carry, Own a Colour
iPhone News

I seem to be going through a rough patch schedule-wise, which is
interfering with the usual daily Cool Toys posts. So, for this week, here's
a round-up of things I wanted to post this week, and would have posted if I
hadn't needed to sleep.

Grid Republic:

Remember the SETI@Home project? Where people gave permission for their
computer power to be shared with the SETI project whenever the screensaver
kicked in? Same idea, but closer to home. Share your computer cycles with
projects for the biological and health sciences, and related topics. My eye
was caught by this example they'd posted.

Areas with low malaria rates 'need mass vaccination':

I'd love this even if it wasn't from the University of Michigan! I've been
a huge fan of beautiful science photography from labs for DECADES. You
don't want to know how excited I get over the Nikon Small World Contest.
But getting my hands on the pictures is a different matter. I beg for the
free calendars my colleagues get from life science suppliers. I wander
through the lab buildings when I have an excuse snapping surreptitious
iPhone pics of pretty postings on the walls. Here, UM is selling prints and
posters and cards (oh my) of gorgeous photographs from campus labs, with
the proceeds going to fund conference travel expenses for grad students and
students, BRILLIANT!!!

I could not resist. uChek is an app + device to turn your iPhone into a
portable urinalysis lab. How cool is that? More info about other tech uses
for urine in my blogpost over at ETechLib:

The Wait We Carry:

Heart wrenching, beautiful, fascinating data visualization of the stats and
stories of United States Veterans waiting for health care coverage to treat
their injuries and related health and mental health complications. The
dataviz starts and ends with stories, offering a window from the war into
the lives of real soldiers who've returned from the wars. There is an
enormous amount of data, which can be sliced and diced in many ways. Want
to know how your state compares? You can do that. Veterans from Operation
Iraqi Freedom? Yes, you can break the info out by conflict. Both? Sure, why
not. Go, explore.

Own A Colour:

Because it's gorgeous, and clever. Own a Colour, developed by Glidden
Paints, is one of the most innovative fundraising apps I've seen. Choose
one of the millions of colors that can be displayed on modern high
resolution monitors, claim it, say why you love it, and donate the funds to

Victoria's Secret Black Friday at Westfield San Francisco Centre 2009
iPhone News

The Victoria's Secret "brand manager" told me I couldn't take photos of the store.

I told him I had taken many photos already of the store in the Westin St Francis Building.

He said I couldn't take photos there either.

I pointed out Black Friday is a news event & he couldn't stop people from taking photos from a public sidewalk.

He said he still didn't want anyone to and threatened to call security on me, so I didn't get to point out to him that Victoria's Secret publishes 400 million catalogs a year with many of the same images.

Plus advertising, tv shows, and even an iPhone app

Then I took these photos from a distance

Elin Kling X Guess By Marciano Capsule Collection Launch

Elin Kling X Guess By Marciano Capsule Collection Launch; East Sydney, Australia ...

East Sydney, Australia, and yet another product / fashion launch, with the usual splash of celebrities.

Firstly, Marciano is a leading lifestyle brand by Guess, so with that out of the way, a bit of colour banter to keep you interested with a bit of back story...

It's said "celebrity sells", but time will tell in seeing just how long the product world will continue to roll out the celebrities. Clearly, Guess and friends are sticking with the formula for the time being.

Of course, you have the A list, B list and C list et al... this event was a mix, to be fair. It's all really about selling product and trying to make it fly off the shelves in the end, and playing the media card. A tad more interesting than reading fashion advertisements in the even thinning Australian broadsheets - newspapers and fashion magazine advertising doesn't come cheap either. News coverage usually beats regular advertising, so the fashion and lifestyle product world will likely continue to hold bashes and parties while playing the celeb card for a while yet.

Next week Australia will get more brand launches, more fashion parties, with many of the usual suspect celebs coming along just to be seen and read about themselves in the paper - or online - whatever the case. Add a bit of gossip... you get a bit of news, and wallah - there's another PR campaign in the bag.

Fun Facts:

Guess (styled as GUESS) is an American clothing line brand. Guess also markets other fashion accessories besides clothes, such as watches, jewelry and perfumes. The company also owns the line Marciano.

The company began advertising in 1982, then later they introduced their iconic black-and-white ads in 1985.[3] The ads have won numerous Clio Awards. Their fashion models have included a number of supermodels, many of whom, such as Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova, Valeria Mazza, and Laetitia Casta, first achieved prominence via these ad campaigns.

Marciano is an Italian given name and it originates from Latin Marcianus or Marcian (Saint Marcians) or "Martians" or Martianus. Also from the cult of Roman god Mars.

Elin Kling is a Swedish fashion blogger born in 1983 in Sweden. She runs a Scandinavian fashion blog called Style by Kling.

Elin Kling started off her career in fashion as a model, with her base in Milano, Italy. Over the years she has also worked within Swedish Television-business. Today she's also the editor of her own-found magazine Style By which can be bought online for iPad's, iPod's and iPhone's as well as in physical form in stores in Sweden.
