Moth With A Golden Mane - Capital Hill - ACT - Australia - 20150315 @ 06:16

I spotted this wooly little character early one morning on one of the brushed metal panels on a parapet near Parliament House, where Melbourne Avenue crosses over State Circle. With all the hair covering the head, I couldn't see any eyes, so I wonder how it navigates the world around it!

With an estimated 30,000 species of moths in Australia, I don't dare try to identify the moths that I photograph. I simply enjoy the incredible range of body types and colors.

The majority of moths are nocturnal and they have hairy bodies to help them retain the internal body temperature that allows them to fly at night.

In contrast to their close relatives in the Lepidoptera order (butterflies), moths generally have feathery antennae. This is certainly the case with this specimen. From what I read, they use them to sense smell and to help with stabilization when flying.

Capital Hill, Australian Capital Territory, Australia.
